The Eleven Cities Tour has become a true spectacle that attracts hundreds of thousands of people. More than 15,000 skaters participate who are encouraged by crowds of people. Only in freezing temperatures can the tour continue along a course of 200 kilometers.
History of the Eleven Cities Tour
It all started in 1909 when a large group of men and women decided to skate along all Frisian cities in one day. The tour turned out to be a great success and since then the event has been repeated every year with more and more skaters taking part.
The start and end point of the Eleven Cities Tour is in Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. The still crosses ten other cities:

- Sloten,
- Stavoren,
- Hindeloopen,
- Workum,
- Bolsward,
- Harlingen,
- Franeker, and
- Dokkum.
The last Eleven Cities Tour was skated on January 4, 1997. Only 15 official tours were made in total. As soon as the freezing cold sets in, the ‘Eleven Cities Fever’ breaks out in the Netherlands in the hope of being able to experience such a spectacle again. It is always a question of whether the ice will be thick enough for the skaters.
If you want to participate in the Eleven Cities Tour you must be a ‘riding member’. Anyone over the age of 16 may register with the association. However, this does not mean that you will also be admitted. Two members of the association decide on this.
How Does the Eleven Cities Tour Work
Every participant of the Eleven Cities Tour receives a stamp card. In each city, you get a stamp on the map. During the tour there are also three secret checks that ensure that there is no cheating.
Only participants who cross the finish line before midnight with a full stamp card will receive the tour. This cross proves that you have successfully completed the entire journey.
The Eleven Cities Tour Competition
It is already very impressive if you can skate the entire tour, but a city tour competition is also organized. Which skaters may participate in the competition is determined. Mainly marathon skaters participate in this, these are skaters who are used to long distances.
Also, each time one skater is selected who has recently achieved a remarkable performance. In total, 224 men and 121 women participate in the competition.
